FRUITFUL FRUIT BOWL - LANE WALKUP
Observing Gigi Hadid’s NYC apartment has been very illuminating for me, in that every single one of her design choices embodies the polar opposite of my aesthetic sensibility. I appreciate a touch of whimsy as much as the next person, but rather than Hadid’s brand of kitschy kindergarten maximalism (Magazine covers! Pasta cabinets! Pop art pens!), I’d prefer something a bit more sophisticated, perhaps something like Portland artist Lane Walkup’s delicate sculptures. Walkup fashions wire into common household objects such as candle holders, flower vases and potted plants, giving them a minimal twist. I’m also enamored with her life-size installations — her fully furnished living room scene looks like a Picasso line sketch made three dimensional. Given the choice, would you rather have this charming fruit bowl displayed on your kitchen counter, or a basketful of pool balls?? That’s what I thought.

MINIMALIST BAR EARRINGS - AGJC
I’m certainly not one to shy away from a statement earring, but in quarantine, with nowhere to go and no one to impress, sporting bold, flashy jewelry is a little overkill. I’ve been pretty lax about wearing earrings at all, but when I must jam something into my lobes to keep the holes from closing, I reach for these bar earrings from Paris-based atelier AgJc. The slim, elongated design doesn’t require backings, so I can conveniently slide them in and out without fuss, and when they’re in they’re so lightweight that I forget they’re there at all. They come in several finishes, including brushed matte and shiny silver, but I went with the black oxidized silver option; though parts of the patina have rubbed off due to natural wear, I can always reoxidize them with, apparently, some hard-boiled eggs.
Cabin in the Woods

Taylor Swift dropped her surprise album folklore last Friday, full of muted tracks evoking misty mornings curled up on the porch of an A-frame. After one (1) listen-through of the album, I found myself perusing cabin listings on Airbnb, desperate to also commune with nature by shambling through the woods in an oversized coat. If you’re going a bit stir-crazy in your house, a fortifying forest getaway may be just what the doctor ordered; this gorgeous lodge in Big Bear, only a couple hours from LA, seems like the perfect weekend escape.
