The Future Perfect
Welcome back to Worn In, Worn Out! Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed some well-deserved downtime — I certainly did. In honor of the new year, all of today’s picks have a bit of a futuristic, avant-garde feel to them. We’re in 2021, baby!
Skirt Skrrt
VINTAGE ABSTRACT SPHERICAL PRINT MIDI SKIRT - CYCLICIDAL
I have discovered the secret to dressing well while working from home: long skirts. For ten years I refused to touch maxi skirts, thanks to a throwaway line I read in Glamour when I was 11 about how short girls would “drown” in too much fabric. When sweatpants fatigue set in, however, I dug out an ankle-grazing houndstooth Ralph Lauren skirt from my mom’s closet, and putting it on was nothing short of magic. It’s easy, it’s comfortable, and it feels worlds more put-together than Adidas track pants. From here on out I resolve to make up for my lengthy abstention, starting with this vintage agnes b. skirt printed with some silver, uh, spherical… things. Kitschy yet cool, vaguely unsettling, will make passersby do a double take? Right up my alley.
Turn to Jelly
Like everyone on Tumblr in 2012-13, I was obsessed with Welcome to Night Vale, and this quote from the series managed to lodge itself in my brain: “There is a thin, semantic line separating weird and beautiful, and that line is covered in jellyfish.” Jellyfish are my favorite animal, so no wonder I was drawn to these hand-sewn pants from artist Julia McGrady, with its dangly ribbons and wispy, lacy scraps of fabric trailing down your legs like tentacles. I’m very into the exposed seam patchwork trend; popularized by designers like Rua Carlota and Helena Manzano, fabric remnants that would otherwise be tossed are instead stitched together to create entirely new, one-of-a-kind garments.
Cyberpunk Chic
JERSEY TOP WITH SLEEVES - HYEIN SEO
Everything Hyein Seo creates looks like an outfit designed for the mysterious, taciturn, tough-as-nails main character in a dystopian sci-fi video game. Crafted from sporty jersey fabric and featuring belts and straps galore, this top is meant for a girl who carries three different weapons on her at all times, for picking off aliens with laser precision. Sadly, I know I could never be badass enough to pull off such a get-up; in a not-too-distant apocalyptic scenario, I’d definitely be the first to get sacrificed.
