Just For You
Hi everyone, happy Wednesday!
My nightly routine consists of brushing my teeth, washing my face, and spending 3 glassy-eyed hours watching a parade of TikToks scroll by on my phone. By now the algorithm is intimately attuned to my tastes (thrift hauls, latte recipes, lots and lots of cats), so I suppose it’s no surprise that it’s started serving up products that are right up my alley. Here are three intriguing things that have popped up recently on my FYP — I’ll link the Toks as well.
Paint the Town
MINJEEMIN (EKO NEEZHING) TRAVEL SET - BEAM PAINTS (TIKTOK HERE)
I never quite got the hang of watercolors back when I was taking art classes; the water just seemed to have a mind of its own, and I preferred the more easy-to-control acrylics and pastels. These watercolors from Beam Paints, however, might just convince me to give it another shot. The Indigenous-owned company hand-crafts paints from ingredients such as tree sap, gum arabic, and Manitoulin honey, then wraps them in beeswaxed canvas and slices of cedar and birch offcuts. Owner Anong Beam grew up watching her father harvest pigment in the Lacloche Mountains, and decided to carry on the tradition. The paints are all-natural, highly-pigmented, and an absolute joy to paint with.
Shoot for the Sky
OLD LOMO BLACK AND CORK CAMERA - PAPER SHOOT (TIKTOK HERE)
For a brief, insane moment, I considered getting into film photography. A quick skim through this ostensible “beginner’s guide,” however, and I quickly backtracked. I love the dreamy, imperfect look of film photography — who doesn’t? — but I certainly don’t love the idea of toiling in a darkroom for hours. Thankfully, these ultra-thin, eco-friendly cameras from Paper Shoot capture the film aesthetic while nixing the development process. The lightweight, digital point-and-shoot cameras are the perfect travel companion, infusing your shots with that signature hazy glow. But the best part? All your photos can be directly uploaded to your computer.
Light Therapy
SUN-CATCHER - SACRA LUNA (TIKTOK HERE)
I could literally watch these mesmerizing sun-catchers all day. Something about the way the crystals cast tiny, dappled bursts of light on the walls melts my mind into a thick sludge, incapable of doing anything except staring slack-jawed at the kaleidoscopic ballet. The Sacra Luna website is currently empty, with an upcoming restock scheduled for March 12, but take a stroll through her Instagram in the meanwhile — I guarantee you’ll be 200% less stressed (hmm ok, maybe 150%.)
