Get the Creeps
Hi everyone, happy Wednesday!
I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t it a bit early to be sending out Halloween content? It’s not even October yet. To which I say, absolutely not, and if you’re just now getting around to pondering your Halloween costume, you’re two weeks too late. I live and die by the editorial calendar, baby — I’m already out here thinking about Christmas! Catch up!
Heads Will Roll
HANDMADE SPIKY METAL THORN NECKLACE - RUXMETALU ($75)
The fuzzy black strings of this necklace are supposedly nylon threads, but let’s be real, those are absolutely strands of hair plucked right off the head of that girl from The Grudge. And let’s not forget that spiky metal pendant either, which could be the rib cage of some baby Eldritch horror. Do not let anyone attempt to put this necklace on you, because if you ever remove it, it’s your head that’s gonna topple right off.
Throw Off the Scent
ABDUCTION - THE EYES ARE ALWAYS THERE (FROM $10 SAMPLE)
Inspired by accounts of real life close encounters, Abduction is artist Joe Merrell and perfumer Christopher Gordon’s attempt to answer: what do aliens smell like? Cold and sterile, like a hospital room? Damp and earthy, like overturned soil? Coppery and metallic, like blood? Whatever this perfume smells like, it’s apparently quite eerie: reviewers call it “spooky,” “chilling,” and “terrifying,” and report that it triggered stomach tightening and upset and anxious feelings. So perhaps not a scent you’d want as an air freshener, but if anyone is organizing a haunted house this year, I suggest pumping the rooms full of Abduction.
Keep Still
LILLY.WINE (/)
Featuring bruised bananas, gnarled gourds, and, memorably, a set of false dentures, there’s something distinctly autumnal — and a bit macabre — about photographer Fran Fiorentini’s still life portraits. He pushes the concept of natura morta to its literal conclusion: an orchid wilted and browned, a hollowed-out pomegranate husk, a squash mottled with mold, everything succumbed to the ravages of time. There’s nothing to buy here, nothing for sale. Just enjoy the scroll.
