Eyes on the Prize
Hi everyone, happy Wednesday!
Now that Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, we’ve finally, officially entered the best season: the season of shorts and sandals, beach days and outdoor concerts, Caprese salads and sunset aperitifs!! And not a moment too soon, either — I, for one, started having dreams about parks and picnics all the way back in February. In the spirit of this iconic list unearthed in an Urban Outfitters dressing room, I always like to set a couple goals for myself when the weather gets warm; this year, mine are learning how to roller skate and catching a fish. What’s on everyone’s bucket list this summer?
Bonsai Bonanza
‘NUMNUM’ THE DWARF NATAL PLUM - DANDY FARMER ($65)
I’ve been working on a story about plant stores, and though I went into it a houseplant skeptic, now I’m like “Damn… should I get a bonsai?” The answer is no, I should not get a bonsai, because the last time I owned something alive and green was a succulent in high school, and it ended up shriveling into a withered brown husk (a succulent!) Needless to say, a fussy, high-maintenance plant is probably not in the cards for me, but nevertheless, that did not stop me from checking out the wares at Dandy Farmer’s Bonsai Shop, which specializes in admittedly very lovely bonsai trees like Japanese elms and willow leaf figs. This dwarf natal plum would, I feel, make for an especially comely addition to my windowsill, but let me not get too ahead of myself; I can start out with a low-key aloe and work my way up.
Keep Your Eyes Peeled
GREEN EYES POUF - AELFIE ($95, $146 W/ CODE)
I stumbled across Aelfie Oudghiri’s eponymous homewares brand during my search for rugs — I briefly considered the Saskia flat-weave rug, before deciding I wanted something with a higher pile — but enjoyed her playful, vibrant aesthetic, and made a note to keep the brand on my radar. But to my dismay, Oudghiri posted on Instagram last week that she’s closing up shop on June 30th to go on an indefinite creative sabbatical. Everything is 25% off in the Aelfie shop with the code RECHARGE, and although lots of wares are sold out already, there are still some gems available, like this fruity duvet set, this mouthy pillow, and these shifty poufs that are definitely giving you the side-eye.
Hold Your Horses
BEETS & CINNAMON - HORSE ICE CREAM ($10)
I was walking down Wyckoff when I spotted a flyer, printed on standard A4 paper, with nothing but a picture of a man eating ice cream and a name: Horse Ice Cream. My mind immediately jumped to artist Alan Wagner’s surreal flyers, and my hunch turned out to be correct; Horse Ice Cream is in fact a project of Wagner’s, but unlike the people in the ads with their bizarre, made-up scenarios, the ice cream might be legit? Delivery is free as long as you’re in Brooklyn, and the flavors — raspberry pomegranate, lavender peppercorn, beets & cinnamon, blue matcha moon, and spicy honey — look pretty darn good to boot. Anyway, I just spent $50 on ice cream, $10 per flavor, but whether the pints will actually show up at my door remains to be seen.
