Hi everyone, happy Wednesday!
Oh man, end of July already? The summer days seem to creep by without warning; you’re so consumed with picnics and pool hangs that one day you wake up and all of a sudden there’s a nip in the air. Back to school displays may already be popping up at Target and Staples, but everyone else, relax: we’ve still got plenty of time to enjoy ourselves. (Plus, the best part of summer is when all the kids are no longer out in full force 😉). Anyone have any fun plans in the next few weeks?
Give ‘Em the Slip
THE CAMI SLIP DRESS - COU COU INTIMATES ($92)
From Barbie Ferreira in Pretties Venice to Gigi Hadid’s new collection with Frankie’s Bikinis, I feel like pointelle is everywhere this summer. And for good reason: it’s sweet without tipping into saccharine, feminine yet unfussy, more elevated than plain ribbed cotton but just as soft and breathable. One brand I feel is doing the classic knit pattern particularly well is Cou Cou, a UK-based intimates brand. I’ve been enamored with their laid-back line of tanks and undies ever since I discovered them — they’re made from compostable 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and trimmed with French lace, topped with tiny ribbon bows. The brand recently came out with slip dresses (recently as in today) and let me tell you, I scrambled to check out — I can already tell that I’m going to wear it everywhere from brunch to bar hopping. They don’t officially launch until tomorrow, but if, like me, you need to get your hands on them as soon as possible, the access code is summerofintimates.
Ice Ice Baby
FLOWER ICE CUBES - DISCO CUBES (INQUIRE FOR PRICE)
This summer has precipitated a very significant transformation for me: slowly but surely, I am turning into a drink girly. What’s that, you ask? Pretty much what it says on the tin: whenever I’m out, I’ll take the opportunity to get myself a fun little drink — an aloe juice, maybe, or a hibiscus water. However, the drink girly lifestyle does add up, so I’ve taken to experimenting with my own drinks at home: mix up some strawberry Calpico, some peach LaCroix, maybe a splash of alc if you’re feeling frisky, and you’re in business. And if I really wanted to take it to the next level, I might even drop in a couple botanical ice cubes, like these ones from Disco Cubes. Brand founder Leslie Kirchhoff infuses them with everything from roses to lilacs, geraniums to guava blossoms, suspending them in a crystalline prison — until they melt, at least. Plop one of these bad boys in there, and I could probably charge $15 for it.
Keep an Open Mind
DURIAN ICE CREAM - BAN BE ($9)
I’ve always been fairly indifferent to durian; it doesn’t make me gag in disgust, but I’m not going to go out of my way to buy it or any durian-flavored products at the grocery store. But while perusing the menu at Doris Ho-Kane’s pop-up Vietnamese bakery Bạn Bè, I noticed it included durian ice cream, and figured well, why not — it’s hot out, and if I didn’t like it I’d only be out a few bucks. Well, it was love at first lick. It’s true that the smell of durian is more off-putting than the taste — the fruit itself is fairly sweet and creamy, and, as I discovered, lends itself perfectly to the ice cream medium. The moment I finished it, down to the very tip of the waffle cone, I found myself craving another. The bakery only operates a couple days a week, and Ho-Kane switches up her menu every weekend, offering an assortment of treats such as flan jelly cake, iced coffee, and pandan waffles; if you have the time to swing by her Carroll Gardens storefront, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
