Be a Doll
Hello! Apologies for going AWOL last week; I usually write these newsletters on Tuesday nights, except last Tuesday night I was a bit distracted, for obvious reasons. Now it’s (mostly) over and done with, we can all take a deep breath — hopefully brighter days are on the horizon. Onward!
Cut a Rug
I live in California, where the houses are built with virtually no insulation, which means that my room is chillier than the North Pole when I wake up in the morning. Also, I have hardwood floors — you can imagine the dreadful sensation of slithering out from under nice, toasty blankets and immediately stepping onto freezing bare floor. Yes yes, I could wear socks or slippers, but why would I do that when I could just get an adorable rug like this one? Artist Hanna Eidson creates fruity tufted works of art in her Nova Scotia studio, including strawberries, grapefruits, and bananas; they’re so colorful and textured, I’m dying to reach through my screen and stroke them. I’m looking forward to the day my toes can meet plush wool rather than a block of ice.

90S FLOWER SKECHERS BOOTS - LITTLE ALYSSA
While digging through my cupboards for a chess board (the result of watching Queen’s Gambit), I discovered a stash of old Barbie and Bratz dolls. I donated all the Barbies to my local preschool, but kept a few Bratz dolls for the nostalgia. I’ve always preferred Bratz to Barbies, especially when it came to their fashion options; who needs princess dresses when you can rock furry coats and mesh crop tops and plaid pants? Of course, when I saw these thick, chunky, Bratz-esque boots on Depop, I flipped out. They look exactly like a miniature version my doll wears, down to the tan flower design. One step closer to my dream of becoming Jade!

MODERN DOLLHOUSE - LE MINI ATELIER MTL
Speaking of dolls, when I stumbled upon this dollhouse on Etsy, the strength of my desire took me by surprise. I mean, just look at it — the mod wallpaper, the splashy teal furniture, the mini succulents! It’s far more chic and stylish than my own house. But I suspect the main reason why I was hit with such a wave of longing is because it’s such a small, safe, self-contained universe. It exists in stasis, ensconced in a bubble, unaffected by external messiness. Everything in the dollhouse is under my control — a rare feeling when so many things in the real world, alas, are not.
